And all delivered by the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.

UNTHINKABLE SOLUTIONS

Aerodynamics is a big deal in the automotive industry. But in developing the McLaren Speedtail, it was applied in its purest form. Every element is shaped so that air is directed anywhere over, under and around the bodywork. The design initially makes it appear to be about aesthetics, but the Speedtail is all about speed. If you look down on the car from above, you will see a distinctive droplet shape, almost like what you see on fish and birds moving at high speed. This design allows air to move along and around the car in an uninterrupted manner. Turbid air is minimised. Everything has been thought of. Down to the last millimetre.

Alcantara covers the side airbags, but the rest of the interior trim has been removed. This saves even more weight. All for even better performance.

Centre seat

In the McLaren Speedtail, the driver is at the heart of the action, literally placed in the centre of the car. This unique central driving position not only offers an unparalleled sense of control and connection to the road, but also optimises the car’s balance and agility.

Cleaner air

Wheels cause turbulence. As they turn, they push disturbed air away from the vehicle. This increases drag causes deceleration. With the lightweight carbon fibre aero hoods, which do not rotate with the wheel, the airflow remains smooth.

Mirrors

Innovations are everywhere. Another automotive first… the Speedtail has no side mirrors. Instead, when the engine starts, two discreet high-definition cameras slide out of the doors. Because they are much smaller than traditional mirrors, they significantly reduce drag.

Rear wing

Instead of a traditional rear wing, the trailing edge integrates adjustable surface elements known as ‘ailerons’ – usually found on aircraft. These extend at high speeds to provide balance and an air braking function. Unlike traditional hinged ailerons, those of the Speedtail are formed from the body of the tail. There is no separate, moving element – the carbon fibre bodywork flexes itself.
